Same same but different: Thailand part II

Warning: if you like beaches, you are going to hate us!

Regresar a Tailandia fue como regresar a casa, regresar a un lugar conocido, su comida y gente, nuestros amigos Pad Thai y Chang nos estaban esperando. Tras pasar todo un día viajando por todos los medios posibles (avión, tren, autobús y ferry) llegamos a Koh Tao, nuestra primera impresión fue WOW! Estamos emocionados por explorar los paraísos de Tailandia.

After the crazy cities of Vietnam and Cambodia we were looking forward to going back to Thailand and chilling on a beach, we also missed our trusted friends Pad Thai and Chang! Our journey back wasn't to be straightforward though, it consisted of a flight to Bangkok, a train to the main train station, a few hours waiting (time to get the pad Thai fix), an overnight train, a few more hours waiting, a bus (that broke down) and finally a ferry. But once we had our first sights of Koh Tao, we knew it was worth it. Many people had told me that this is their favourite Thai island, and it wasn't hard to see why. 

Compramos snorkels y decidimos explorar las playas, Aow leuk es un lugar impresionante, peces de color neón nadando a tu alrededor, mantarrayas, corales, todo a unos cuantos pasos. También es posible obtener certificado de buceo pero de acuerdo a nuestro presupuesto nos quedamos felices con nuestro snorkel.

Many people get their diving certificates here but we decided on the budget option of buying snorkels and exploring a few of the island's beaches and coral reefs ourselves. We were really lucky to see loads of different species of tropical fish and even a Ray.  

En Shark bay encuentras arena con una textura diferente, fina, caminar en ella es como un masaje en tus pies. No vimos ningún tiburón pero pudimos apreciar los corales de cerca.

We didn't actually manage to see any sharks here, but it was one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. The sand is so fine that when its wet it has a texture of wet clay.

Iain me sorprendió con un pequeño regalo para celebrar la independencia de México.

I managed to find Rigel some top quality tequila to celebrate Mexican independence day. 

Koh panghan (16/09/13)

Tras 8 meses de hablar sobre la fiesta en esta isla, estabamos ansiosos por dejar de pensar en el presupuesto y solo divertirnos. Koh Phangan no nos defraudó, full moon party aqui te vamos.

We had been planning our trip to Koh Phangan for some time to coincide with the famous full moon party. After being really good limiting our nights out it was time to let down our hair and party, or in other words it was time to buy a neon vest, body paint, comb out the 'fro and drink some potent buckets of Thai "whiskey" with some type of even more potent energy drink. 

Por suerte pudimos apreciar KP antes de las fiestas, sorpendentemente impecable.

Full moon party es conocida alrededor del mundo, la fiesta toma parte cada mes, claro cuando es luna llena, miles de personas de diferemtes partes del mundo unidos por una razón: fiestaaaaaa! Vestirse de colores vibrates y pintarse el cuerpo es extra.

We haven't met many Mexicans on our travels but it was no surprise to find one in the biggest party!

Todos en el hostel

Conocimos a esta pareja (Irlandeses) en Bolivia en Abril y los volvimos a encontrar por acá, el mundo es mas pequeño que lo que creemos.

It really is a small world, we met these Irish guys in Bolivia many months before and then ended up in the same hostel. 

Y el premio para el mejor body paint es para "The yellow French guy", después de dos días veíamos residuos de pintura amarilla en el hostel.

The award for best body paint goes to.......the yellow French guy. The bathroom was also painted yellow for many days after and probably still is!

Koh Samui (21/09/13)

Decidimos ir a Mae Nam, una playa alejada, callada y tranquila, justo lo que necesitabamos despues de KP. Leímos un libro que encontramos en nuestro cuarto, "Welcome to hell" habla sobre la cárcel en Bangkok y la corrupción de las autoridades, no es un buen libro para leer cuando estas en Tailandia.

After the epic partying we caught a ferry to Koh Samui and found the quietest beach to relax on. Although our choice of book wasn't the best. A true story of life inside the Bangkok Hilton, we were on best behavior after that!

Angthong Marine National Park es sin lugar ha dudas uno de los lugares mas impresionantes en los que he estado, tuvimos un día soleado, sus aguas y playas con colores que solo había visto en películas. 

We went on a day trip to a nearby national park and saw some great unspoilt beaches and a hidden lagoon that was the inspiration for the book the beach.

La vista del parque te deja sin aliento, por dos razones: es un recorrido difícil y agotador para llegar al mirador y porque simplemente es hermoso.

Our reward for a really tough climb up to the viewpoint was this scenery, hard word but totally worth it. 

Krabi town (25/09/13) 

Krabi fue una parada para disfrutar de la comida local, los precios casi de regalo y los sabores sin igual. Aquí probamos  el mejor curry que hemos tenido en nuestro viaje hasta el momento, un puesto en el mercado con un señor amigable que te da a probar todos los platillos.

The food and culture really changes as you travel south in Thailand, this was a great place to get my fix of Indian curry, not quite as good as in NW London, but close and a tenth of the price!

The krabi crabby

Phi Phi (28/09/13)

Llegamos junto con una tormenta, lluvia y mas lluvia mientras caminabamos a nuestro nuevo hogar y aun así el mar de Phi Phi nos sorprendió, con su color hermoso e indescriptible. Imaginen como me enamoré de sus playas el día siguiente cuando el sol salió.

It didn't take long to realise why this island is so well known for its beauty, even arriving in torrential rain, the sea was an amazing colour. 

Para los que se quieren aventurar en Thai Boxing hay un bar con un ring, no se preocupen Iain solo se subió para la foto.

In one of the town's bars there is a boxing ring, anyone in the bar can fight for a bucket of booze. Get in the ring!!!

Tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer el lugar donde la película "The beach" fue filmada, no tengo palabras para describirlo, Maya bay es simplemente un paraíso. No puse mas fotos porque salgo como loca desquiciada con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja. 

We were in 2 minds about visiting Maya bay where they filmed the movie The Beach, we had heard it can get completely overcrowded and dirty. Maybe we were lucky as our longtail arrived earlier than the other boat tours and we had the beach to ourselves, at least for a few minutes!

After clambering over rocks trying to not drop the camera in the sea and climbing a very dodgy rope ladder we got to one of the most stunning beaches in the world. 

Tuvimos que nadar de nuestro bote a las rocas y subir por una interesante escalera para llegar a una de las playas mas hermosas que hemos visto, valieron la pena los raspones.

Fuimos afortunados de disfrutar de la playa solo para nosotros (cuando digo nosotros hablo de nuestro tour), fuimos los primeros en llegar, cuando nos ibamos vimos una ola de turistas llegar en lanchas deportivas.

Goodbye Phi Phi

Koh Lanta (03/10/13)

Cuando compramos el boleto del ferry a Koh Lanta, la señora nos advertió de una manera muy efusiva que nunca ibamos a dejar la isla y la verdad fue que al final no queríamos irnos. Encontramos nuestro paraíso, caminar en la playa, ver los atardecederes, dormir escuchando el sonido del mar, lo extraño.

Dispite the pictures here it hardly stopped raining the whole time we were here, but that didn't stop it being one of our favourite places in Thailand. When we booked our ferry tickets here, the lady said that we wouldn't want to leave and she was correct. 

Nuestra casita de bamboo, el paraíso mas barato de nuestro viaje (estoy segura que no encontraremos uno mas barato), solo a unos pasos de la playa. Antes de encontrar este excelente lugar estuvimos en un hostel diseñado en una casa de árbol, básico pero relajado, "Chill out".

We spent our first couple of days staying in what was basically a treehouse, very cool but not the most comfortable, but then we found our own little paradise bamboo hut right on the beach  days were spent reading, walking and sleeping whilst hearing the waves. Definitely a good way to say goodbye to Thailand.
